Engine Management Diagnostics/Warning light reset

Cars produced after 2000 (most Mk 2 MGFs, later ZRs etc) and all TFs have a MEMS3 engine management control system.  This has a diagnostic port under the steering wheel, which specific equipment can be attached to.  This can either be done by a handheld reader to look for faults.  This reader can also look at live data when engine is running (see list below)  ** Update...I can now also read older systems such as MEMS1.9 and  MEMS2J, so should be able to work on all MGs and most Rovers**

Why would I need this?

If there is someting wrong with the managment system that controls all aspects of the engine and all sensors etc, then a code is stored in the system to alert the dealer during servicing , or to help diagnose problems.  This is often (but not always) accompanied by illumination of the engine warning light on the dashboard.  As I said this is not always the case, and errors can be present in your system leading to poor running, or increased fuel consumption, failed emmissions test at MOT etc, with no warning light.

The reader can identify the following
  • Engine RPM
  • Calculated Load Value
  • Coolant Temperature
  • Fuel System Status
  • Vehicle Speed
  • Short Term Fuel Trim
  • Long Term Fuel Trim
  • Intake Manifold Pressure
  • Timing Advance
  • Intake Air Temperature
  • Air Flow Rate
  • Absolute Throttle Position
  • Oxygen sensor voltages/associated short term fuel trims
  • Fuel System status
  • Fuel Pressure
  • others...

It can also be used to reset the warning light if yours is on.  However, it is recommended only to do this when you have identified what caused it in the first place.

My new reader can tell if the fault is historic (happened in the past), or is pending (there's somethign wrong which is starting to get noticed by the control system)

This unit can also test the fuel pump and more importantly for MGF/TF owners, can check if your radiator fan is functioning properly (I can also check the engine bay fan too, manually).

This will be free of charge to people getting hydragas pumping/keys prgrammed etc, but will require a small "donation"  if done alone (can cost around £40  at a dealer!!!)
